Consumer Protection Alert: Beware of Investment Scams
⚠️ Community Safety Reminder Howard County's Office of Consumer Protection is warning residents about the increasing number of investment scams being promoted through social media, text messages, and online platforms. Scammers often promise guaranteed returns or quick profits and may pressure victims into making immediate payments through wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards. If an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, take time to verify the source before taking action. Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying informed, asking questions, and reporting suspicious activity.
Students Learn Maryland Legislative Process Through 2026 LOKA Summer Internship Program
Future leaders in action! Students participating in the Maryland Korean American Civic Association's summer legislative internship program recently attended orientation and began preparing for a summer of learning about state government, public policy, and civic engagement. The program provides valuable hands-on experience in the legislative process while helping students develop leadership, communication, and community engagement skills. LOKA is proud to support opportunities that encourage young people to become active and informed citizens.
Vanessa Atterbeary Meets with Korean Community
LOKA was honored to participate in a community discussion with Howard County Executive candidate Vanessa Atterbeary to discuss issues important to Korean American residents. Topics included support for small businesses, improving access to information and services for seniors, language accessibility, and strengthening communication between local government and the Korean community. Meaningful conversations like these help ensure that our community’s needs and perspectives are represented in local decision-making. Thank you to everyone who joined the discussion and shared their experiences.
2026 APAA Youth Fellows Selected (Korean Students Included)
Congratulations to the three Korean American students selected for the Maryland Governor’s Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (APAA) 2026-2027 Youth Fellows Leadership Program! Through this prestigious program, students will gain firsthand experience in public policy, civic engagement, leadership development, and community service while working alongside state leaders and advisors. We are proud to see Korean American youth represented and making their voices heard in shaping Maryland’s future. LOKA remains committed to empowering the next generation of Korean American leaders through civic engagement and leadership opportunities.
2026 AAPI Festival
LOKA proudly participated in the 2026 AAPI Festival at Merriweather Park, joining thousands of community members in celebrating the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Through interactive cultural activities, community engagement, and educational outreach, LOKA connected with attendees of all ages while promoting Korean heritage, civic participation, and cross-cultural understanding. The festival provided a meaningful opportunity to build community, celebrate diversity, and showcase the vibrant spirit of the Korean American community in Howard County and beyond.
New Howard County AAPI Cultural Center Planning
As a Howard County AAPI Commissioner, I am excited to represent the community and attend the visioning/brainstorming idea sessions with the architectural firm and county offices for the Howard County AAPI Cultural Center. It will be located inside the renovated old historic Howard County Courthouse in Ellicott City, Maryland. I was invited on a tour to see what changes would occur inside the building without compromising its historical significance.
